Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Dialogue Event

Paths to Women's Economic Empowerment in IORA Countries, With a Focus on Tourism & Textiles
Park Royal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
17-19 August 2014

Venue & Date

The Workshop will be convened at the Park Royal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur from the 17 to the 19 of August 2014.

Summary

At the November 2013 meeting, IORA Ministers agreed to develop initiatives to enhance women's political and economic empowerment, and mainstream gender considerations into IORA work. Australia will host an IORA dialogue event on paths to women's economic empowerment, with a focus on tourism and textiles, in the Indian Ocean region. The UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre, based in Bangkok, will be Australia's key partner in the delivery of this event. The event will be held in Malaysia.

The dialogue event will be underpinned by research and analysis on constraints to economic empowerment and trade barriers for women-owned and women-led enterprises, particularly in tourism and textiles. The event will be chaired by the Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls.

Women's Economic Empowerment

The conceptual basis for the event is the promotion of women's economic empowerment as a key element of broader economic growth. The definition of women's economic empowerment being used for the event is: female economic advancement (economic success and gain for women), and women's power and agency (the ability to make and act on decisions, and control resources and profits).

Key Objectives for the Dialogue Event

  • To consider possible paths to women's economic empowerment in IORA nations, and report back to the IORA Council of Minister's meeting in October 2014.
  • To build awareness among IORA Member States of women's economic empowerment issues related the priority Trade and Investment Facilitation area of IORA's work.
  • To promote dialogue and exchange among IORA Member States through panel sessions and presentations involving business networks and women traders from IORA Member Countries.

Event Arrangements

DFAT (South Asia Branch, Canberra), and the UNDP (Asia Pacific Regional Centre) will work together to deliver this event. The event will be designed to produce some key policy recommendations that Australia will table at the October 2014 Council of Ministers meeting for consideration and endorsement.
