IORA Workshop on
Women's Entrepreneurship and Skill Development
in collaboration with the
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICC)

Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, India
27 September 2017

Women's economic empowerment in the Indian Ocean Rim Asscoiation (IORA) was established as a cross-cutting priority at the IORA's 13th Council of Ministers Meeting (COMM) in Perth, Australia on 1 November 2013 and was formalised in the 2014 IORA Economic Declaration. This reflects the significant role of women in the socio-economic development of the Indian Ocean Rim countries and a strengthened commitment by Member States to gender equality. Significantly, women empowerment is included within all project proposals along the six priority areas of IORA as an important contributor to reducing unemployment and for the subsequent alleviation of poverty in the region.

IORA supports initiatives and efforts including those in the education sector to promote women in the fields of science and technology and offers training programs in entrepreneurship. Women entrepreneurs are on the rise in many Indian Ocean Rim countries and can be further empowered to make important contributions to their national economies and vital drivers of sustainable development.

While women make important contributions to a range of value chains across Indian Ocean Rim economies, significant efforts are still needed to better include them and move them into higher value-added production and decision-making positions.

The upcoming IORA Workshop on Women Entrepreneurship and Skill Development, is being organized in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), on the 27th September 2017, at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, in New Delhi. The Workshop will serve as a platform for emerging women entrepreneurs and other stakeholders to discuss the key challenges facing women entrepreneurs. This workshop will create a conducive environment to share best practices and experiences in overcoming challenges in the region; and to gain insights learned from the business models adopted in the Indian context and around the Indian Ocean.

FICCI is the largest and oldest apex business organisation in India, serving as the leading voice of India's business and industry with over 250,000 companies.  As a not-for-profit organisation established in 1927, FICCI provides a platform for networking and consensus building, within and across, different sectors, and  is the first port of call for Indian industry, policy makers and the international business community.
