Indian Ocean Studies Chair in Mauritius

The Chair in Indian Ocean Studies is a project jointly funded by the Government of India, through the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) and the Government of Mauritius, through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). The project was started in January 1998 and ran over a two-year period. Prof. J. Mahender Reddy, formerly Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Osmania University, India was appointed as the first Chair in Indian Ocean Studies for a period of two years.

It was agreed that the Chair will initially be established at the University of Mauritius in Mauritius and will foster research activities and studies in fields of interest to IORA, with a view to evolving realistic programmes of cooperation.  The areas of study and research will include amongst others socio-economic, environmental, marine resources, trade and commerce, industry and agriculture.  The Chair will play a catalytic role and attain higher visibility through the organization of workshops, disseminating research findings to interested stakeholders, including policy planners and business groups.

At the IORAG meeting held in Maputo, Mozambique in March 1999, it was agreed that the Chair in Indian Ocean Studies is relevant and should be maintained.

The second exercise for the position of Chair in Indian Ocean Studies has started and a new nominee is about to be selected by India and Mauritius shortly.
